Sunburn Prevention

A sunburn is a burn to living tissue such as skin produced by overexposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation, commonly from the sun’s rays. Exposure of the skin to lesser amounts of UV will often produce a suntan. Usual mild symptoms in humans and animals are red or reddish skin that is hot to the touch, general fatigue, and mild dizziness. An excess of UV-radiation can be life-threatening.

Sunburn is an acute cutaneous inflammatory reaction that follows excessive exposure of the skin to ultraviolet radiation (UVR). UVR exposure can come from a variety of sources, including sun, tanning bed, phototherapy lamp, and arc lamp.1 Long-term adverse health effects of repeated exposure to UVR are well described but are beyond the scope of this article. Sunburn is generally classified as a superficial or first-degree burn

Common Causes:

Sunburn results when the amount of exposure to the sun or other ultraviolet light source exceeds the ability of the body’s protective pigment, melanin , to protect the skin. Sunburn in a very light-skinned person may occur in less than 15 minutes of midday sun exposure, while a dark-skinned person may tolerate the same exposure for hours.

Repeated sun exposure and suntans cause premature aging of the skin (wrinkling, sagging, and brown sunspots). Repeated sunburns increase the risk of skin cancer in the damaged area. Each blistering sunburn doubles the risk of developing malignant melanoma, which is the most serious type of skin cancer.

Dysplastic moles (nevi) are common, and many people have a few of these abnormal moles. The risk of melanoma is greatest for people who have a large number of dysplastic nevi. The risk is especially high for people with a family history of both dysplastic nevi and melanoma.

Sunburn Symptoms

Mild and uncomplicated cases of sunburn usually result in minor skin redness and irritation. Untreated and with enough exposure, you can experience shock (poor circulation to vital organs) and even death (sun poisoning). Sufficient exposure can become remarkably painful.

Pain usually peaks six hours to 48 hours after exposure to ultraviolet light. Within a few days, your body starts to heal itself by “peeling” the top layer of damaged skin. After peeling, your skin may temporarily have an irregular color and pattern. Depending on the severity, it may take several days or up to three weeks for the sunburn to heal.
Nitially, your skin turns red about 2-6 hours after exposure and feels irritated. The peak effects are noted at 12-24 hours.
More severe cases, such as those experienced by rafters (Cuban and other island peoples fleeing their countries on homemade rafts) are complicated by severe skin burning and blistering, massive fluid loss (dehydration), electrolyte imbalance, and infection.

Prevention
Apply generous amounts of sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30. Pay special attention to your face, nose, ears, and shoulders. The higher the SPF, the greater the protection.
Apply sunscreen 30 minutes prior to sun exposure to allow penetration. Re-apply after swimming and every 2 hours while you are outdoors.

Sunburn treatment

Take anti-inflammatory medication, such as aspirin or ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, others), on a regular basis according to the label instructions until redness and soreness subsides.
Apply soothing lotions that contain aloe vera to sunburned areas. Topical steroids (such as 1% hydrocortisone cream) may also help with sunburn pain and swelling. Note: Do not use the cream on children younger than age 2 unless your doctor tells you to.

Diabetes is Controllable and Preventable

Now before I get into how it’s possible for diabetes to be controlled and preventable, let’s first talk about what a disastrous disease it is.

As of now type 2 diabetes has killed 23 million people and pre-diabetes has killed 57 million people.  It also affects one in four Americans too.  There are also 6.2 million cases of diabetes undiagnosed.

The saddest story of all is that this horrible disease is moving down into our children and grandchildren now.  That’s never before happened.  Ten years or more ago that was unheard of.  Now kids as young as 5 years old are being diagnosed.  Not only is the disease bad enough in itself but by having it increases the risk of heart disease and a host of other diseases too.  Worst of all it’s estimated by 2010 diabetes will be the number one killer of overtaking heart disease and cancer.

When a person has diabetes, the pancreas can no longer control the body’s blood sugar levels.  So what causes this serious breakdown in the first place?  Well weight plays a role and so does processed sugar.  But that’s not all.  There is a lot more to it.

Some other outside factors that causes this breakdown is antibiotics, food preservatives and even chlorine, which reduces your ability to absorb food properly.  Now when it comes to chlorine, it attacks your body on two fronts: your intestines and your pancreas.

Now here is something else to be concerned about.  Diabetes affects the health of your eyes too.  It could even be responsible for you going blind.  But that’s not the only thing that can cause that to happen.

Prescription drugs play a major role in eye health too.  If you have eyelid drop, glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration, optic nerve damage, retina damage you can always suspect prescription drugs as the first cause of your problems.

So here you are now trying to solve your diabetes disease with prescription drugs and you create some other health problems.

It’s reported that eight different drugs can cause complications with eye surgery, 25 can cause glaucoma, 15 can cause cataracts, 10 can damage your retina, and 6 can cause optic nerve damage.

While we are on this subject on prescription drugs let’s talk about the one for diabetes called Avandia.  It’s suspected the drug may increase the risk of brittle bones and osteoporosis according to a new study conducted by researchers from the Salk Institute in LaJolla, California, and published in the journal, Nature Medicine.

Here’s what we really have to be concerned about.  Prescription drugs for any disease are not usually safe no matter if the FDA did approve them.  But worst of all where the ingredients come from is really important too.

Here’s what I have learned.  The final drug product might be made in America, but that doesn’t mean its ingredients are.  In fact, most of the inactive ingredients don’t come from the U.S.

Wouldn’t this make you wonder what kinds of rules and regulations govern these operations?  Here we have the FDA supposedly protecting us and their seal of approval is usually respected by the general public and believed the drug is safe.

See if this does not shock you somewhat.  A huge 80 percent of all active pharmaceutical ingredients that are used by manufacturers here in America are imported, mostly from China.

But here is something more shocking than that.  According to former FDA commission David Kessler, China is as close to an unregulated environment as you can get.

However if more people would finally wake up and realize it, they should not accept drugs as a cure for any illness or disease.  The natural alternative way is the only answer to resolving an unhealthy condition.

The natural way is how diabetes can be controlled and prevented.  A company I’m associated with, has now launched a new product that makes that possible.  It is believed this product is the health breakthrough people with this disease are going to benefit from.

An eight-week clinical study has proved this product has gotten even better results than first anticipated.  No drug can stand up against this product for at least two good reasons.  First, there were no side effects experienced by anyone in the study and second, the cost is far less than the expense of a drug and insulin.

Don’t make any mistake about it, this product is going to save thousands of lives and get victims of this disease back to a healthy condition soon and forever

5 Tips for Cancer Free Safe Grilling

For years there has been a controversy whether grilled meats cause cancer . A few research studies have found that grilling and broiling cause meats (red meat, poultry and fish included ) to produce cancer-causing compounds. These compounds known as HCAs (heterocyclic amines), have been shown to cause tumors in animals and possibly increase the risk of cancers of the breast, colon, stomach and prostate in humans. This was confirmed officially by The National Institute of Health, Dept. of Health and Human Services in January 2005 when it added heterocyclic amines in it’s hit list of cancer causing agents.

Does this mean grilling is a big no ? Not always. Large doses of meat especially red meat has never been recommended by doctors. According to most researchers, grilled vegetables and fruits, burnt toast and dishes in which only the seasoning

is charred present a substantially lower risk of cancer. You can still eat meat but make sure to eat it in moderation. Below are 7 tips you can implement right away to make your grilling safer and free from cancer causing agents.

1. A good idea is to grill vegetables instead of meat always. Try grilling marinated vegetables on skewers, a grilling tray or wrapped in foil. Other healthy barbecue choices are veggie burgers, tofu or quesadillas and even tortillas.

2. Marinating meats before grilling may significantly reduce the amount of HCAs. . A marinade is usually acidic and always flavorful. The Acids in marinades do not tenderize meat. However some store bought marinades will tenderize meat because they contain enzymes.

3. One of the most important tips is to clean your grill thoroughly. Scrape the burned bits off the grates using a grill brush or even a paint scraper. The residue left on the grill often contains high does of HCA’s.

4. PAHs (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) are cacogenic substances which are formed when fat from meats comes in contact with coal and other hot objects. These chemicals are deposited on your food during flare ups and during evaporation. Avoid letting juices drip into the flames or coals, which causes smoke and flare-ups. Use tongs or a spatula to turn foods, instead of piercing meat with a fork. Covering the grill with punctured aluminum foil, not placing meats directly over coals and keeping a spray bottle of water on hand (to control flare-ups) are other ways to reduce drips.

5. Flip frequently. Recent research has found that cooking hamburger patties at a lower Temperature and turning them often accelerates the cooking process, helps prevent the formation of HCAs and is equally effective in killing bacteria.

Inspirational Audio Book Helps Woman Survive Through Cancer!

Julia was given a 50/50 chance to live, but more recently it seemed those odds were slowly getting worse. She had just undergone months of chemotherapy to try to prevent her cancer from spreading through the rest of her body, and also had a double mastectomy, but her most recent tests showed that the cancer was starting to spread down her body.

There wasn’t much her doctors could do now. They increased her chemotherapy dosages, even flew in a breast cancer specialist from Pennsylvania for a second opinion, but even he said that Julia would just have to keep taking her medication and wait it out. It was all in God’s hands now.

This was also real tough on her family. Julia was just 26 years old. Her parents and two sisters have been by her side just about every day since she was diagnosed eight months ago. They did their best to keep Julia’s spirits up, but it wasn’t easy.

The next set of tests showed more bad news – the cancerous cells have started to increase in number. Julia was given two months to live.

She started to accept her fate. She had lived a short life, but a happy one. There was nothing left to do now but enjoy her time that was left with family and friends.

Soon after that most recent test, Julia’s mom came across an audio book in a bookstore at the mall about women who had overcome their battles with cancer. She bought it and brought it in for Julia to listen to the next day.

Julia listened as she heard stories about women who were in the same situation as she was facing now. Women who were told they had months, even weeks to live – but had the courage to stay strong and never give up. Julia soon adopted the same mentality – she wanted to be a survivor!

By listening to the insipirational audio book, Julia found the inner strength to battle and face this disease head on. Even though there was nothing she could do on her own physically, her state of mind and desire to overcome and live took on new meaning for her.

The next tests showed a miracle – her cancer was clearing up! Julia and her family couldn’t believe it! Was it the increased chemotherapy, or maybe the audio book that inspired her body and mind? No one could tell for sure – it was probably a combonation of both – but three months later, Julia was in full remission and back home.

Using Radiology For Health Prevention Is A Great Lifesaver

There are four main types of radiology: diagnostic, interventional, nuclear medicine and radiation therapy. The diagnostic radiological procedure includes common preventative medicine practices like MRIs, mammograms, ultrasounds, X-rays and angiography. Doctors check the various systems of the body to determine if anything is wrong. This is the best health prevention method, aside from the standard healthy diet and exercise.

The interventional radiological method is an alternative to surgery that includes biopsies, cancer treatments, angioplasty, embolization, vertebroplasty, nerve blocks and varicose vein treatments. Nuclear medicine is a way of assessing damage done to the heart, lungs, thyroid, liver, gallbladder and bones.

The physiological damage and progression of tumors can be monitored using this method. Lastly, radiation therapy is used to treat brain tumors and cancers, such as breast, colorectal, head, neck, lung and prostate.

Radiological methods can be used within three hours of a person’s stroke symptoms. Strokes are typically caused by blood clots to the brain, so the standard procedure dissolves blood clots through an intravenously injected tissue plasminogen activator. If it has been more than three hours, but less than six, then an intra-arterial thrombolysis treatment may be performed, which places the clot-busting drug right at the site and will mechanically break up the clot.

With this amazing minimally invasive procedure, most stroke patients can regain full functionality and return to every day life. Health experts say the main challenge with stroke radiology is having enough stroke teams ready to handle patients within the three-hour timeframe.

One of the most common uses of radiology is for angioplasty, or the opening of clogged arteries, which benefits patients who are at risk for heart attacks or strokes. In this procedure, inflated balloons are passed through catheters to the trouble spots to increase blood flow to the brain, kidneys and legs.

Often, chemicals are placed in clogged locations to dissolve the plaque or the clots, which are then mechanically broken up. Another related radiological technique is stent grafting, where a synthetic tube is placed in large blood vessels to prevent an aneurysm or fatal bleeding.

Those concerned with senior health favor the non-invasive methods especially. Many people are in and out during the same day and continue to live productive lives afterward.

The use of radiology for health prevention and testing is one of the biggest lifesavers, health experts say. Ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging and mammograms have the ability to help patients who would have otherwise died to live an extra 20+ years.

As for interventional radiological procedures, the benefits are numerous. It requires less anesthesia, less trauma to the body, shortens the hospital stay and recovery period, as well as causing minimal discomfort.

Men’s Health – Checking for Testicular Cancer with Self Examination

Men’s health is best protected by a lifestyle that includes regular testicular examination.  Early detection of tumours on the testes significantly increases survival.

Sixty seconds is all it takes to self examine your own testicles.  It is recommended that all men over the age of 14 conduct a testicular self exam once a month.  This is the best way to become familiar  with your own anatomy so that any changes are noticed right away.

Here is the four step procedure for a testicular self examination (TSE).  It is recommended to do the self exam after a warm bath or shower when the structures in the scrotum are relaxed.

Holding the scrotum, place one testicle between your thumb and fingers and gently feel the entire surface of the testicle rolling it gently between your thumb and fingers.  It should be smooth with no lumps or bumps. Keep feeling all around the testicle and move up to the top where you should be able to feel the epididymis.  It might even extend a bit behind the testicle.   It might be a little tender when pressed but should feel like a “comma” shaped structure. Move up the epididymis and locate the spermatic cord.  It will feel like a tube.  It should be soft and movable. Repeat on the other testicle and your testicular self exam is complete.  It should not take more that 60 seconds.

Treatment

Testicular cancer is treated by removal of the affected testicle (orhiectomy) and radiation or chemotherapy as follow-up treatment if needed.  Testicular self examination is the best way to ensure early detection of tumours on the testes.  If found and treated early survival rates are close to 90%.

Only one testicle is needed for male fertility and normal male sexual functioning so if testicular cancer is detected and treated early, the orchiectomy should not affect sexual activity or plans for family expansion.  Prosthetic devices are available to restore the normal feel and appearance after the removal of the affected testicle.

Early detection through self examination is the best health promotion strategy for protecting mens health.  Like its female counterpart, breast cancer, testicular cancer is not preventable in the sense that the exact mechanisms of cause are not clearly known.

Do You Know How to Prevent Wrinkles?

I can tell you how to prevent wrinkles in one short sentence. If you want to fight wrinkles, you have to fight free radical damage. Now, how you do that, takes a little more explaining.

Throughout our lives there are molecular changes going on that will eventually affect our appearance. Those changes may be the beginning of a wrinkle or the beginning of a cancerous growth.

So, not only are you going to learn how to prevent wrinkles, you are also going to learn how to protect your overall health.

All of the molecules in the human body perform necessary functions, but some of them can become damaging, if their “function” gets out of control. There are many of these molecules, but they are commonly lumped into a large group called free radicals.

If their activity is not controlled, free radicals can damage DNA strands, thought to be the cause of many forms of cancer. Free-radical induced oxidation of other chemicals in the body causes some of the interior symptoms of aging, such as atherosclerosis.

They contribute to alcohol-induced liver damage; promote the development of emphysema from cigarette smoking. They are involved in Parkinson’s disease, deafness, schizophrenia and Alzheimer’s. Think of any disease and they are at least partially responsible.

Because they are necessary for life, the body has a number of mechanisms to minimize their damage and repair the damage that does occur. (Here’s where you get to learn to fight wrinkles.) These mechanisms require specific nutrients to function properly.

You probably did not expect to hear that good nutrition would help fight wrinkles. But, poor nutrition is partially responsible for all of our health problems. Combine chronically poor eating habits with the environmental toxins that we are exposed to on a daily basis and it’s surprising that the human lifespan is increasing, rather than decreasing.

So, here’s how to prevent wrinkles. Use a daily and nightly cream that contains the nutrients necessary for the body to repair itself. Those nutrients include protein, enzymes, the vitamins A, C, and E, and polyphenol antioxidants.

You can fight wrinkles with creams that contain beeswax, honey, citrus extracts, kelp, grape seed oil, olive oil and Shea butter. All of those are good sources of polyphenol antioxidants. Coenzyme Q10 is also important.

But, a new compound that contains a unique protein peptide complex may be the most effective antioxidant, of all.

When I first started learning how to prevent wrinkles, it seemed impossible. Our bodies produce millions of free radicals every day and millions of molecules of antioxidants are required to stop them.

It’s impossible to get that many antioxidants in one day or apply that many directly to your face.

But, this new compound and its unique protein peptides can control millions of free radicals with a single molecule. It’s been proven in clinical studies to fight wrinkles. It will soon be available in dietary supplements, as well.

You can find out more about this compound by going to my website.

So, that’s your primer on how to prevent wrinkles. It’s by no means complete, because I didn’t even mention the sun, but it’s a good start, anyway.

How to Prevent Wrinkles – 2 Steps That Fight Wrinkles Successfully

Here’s how to prevent wrinkles with just a few simple steps.  If you want to fight wrinkles, you have to fight free radical production.  This can be an easy thing to accomplish.  You just have to avoid things that increase the production and seek things that “quench” their activity.  Here’s the basic info that you need.

What are Free Radicals?

They are molecules that serve a purpose within the cells of our body, but when that purpose is done, there must be a balancing factor to stop them.  Several things increase the number of radicals that are present in a cell.  If there are too many of them, the balance is thrown off and they begin to act in a frenzied fashion.

What Factors increase Free Radical production?

UV radiation from the sun, environmental pollutants, carcinogens, toxins and age can all increase their number and activity.

For many years, we were told that avoiding overexposure to the sun was how to prevent wrinkles and skin cancer.  We were told that the daily use of sunscreen would help us fight wrinkles and protect our skin’s health.

No one told us that those sunscreen compounds that the cosmetic companies were selling us had not been fully evaluated for safety.  Over two years ago, researchers proved that oxybenzone, a popular sun-screen, is also a carcinogen.  So, while we were trying to fight wrinkles and skin cancer, we were being counterproductive.

Step 1 – How to Prevent Wrinkles with Antioxidants

You should avoid overexposure to the sun.  You should protect yourself from pollutants, carcinogens and toxins, whenever possible.  But, some things, like age, cannot be avoided.

When you expect to spend more than 15 minutes in direct sunlight, you should try to cover exposed areas with a hat, sunglasses or other clothing.  For the parts of your body that are exposed, you should use a zinc oxide sun-block and reapply it according to the package directions.

Every day, you should be using a cream that contains antioxidants, not a sun-screening compound.  Antioxidants balance the see-saw created by those things that increase free radical production.  It takes a molecule of an antioxidant to control a free radical molecule, so you need lot of antioxidants, or you need something special.

A company in New Zealand has developed a new way to fight wrinkles.  (For more details see author box at the end of this article) They found an amino acid protein complex that has unique “enzymatic” antioxidant activity.  Instead of one molecule for one radical, one molecule can control millions of free radicals.

Step 2 – How to Prevent Wrinkles with Special Creams

Creams that combine the protein complex with grape seed oil and Babassu palm wax prevent environmental pollutants from entering your pores.  You should look for a company that thoroughly tests raw ingredients for toxins and then tests each batch.

Make sure that the company wants to help you fight wrinkles caused by free radical damage.  There products should be free of carcinogens and basically safe enough to eat.  In a nutshell, that’s how to prevent wrinkles.- Margaret Bell

Alternative Cancer Treatments – Oxygen Therapy

There is much evidence to suggest that oxygen is a major deterrent to the creation and survival of cancer cells in the body and many emminent scientists and researchers consider the development of oxygen-based therapies as key to the ultimate eradication of cancer. There are now several oxygen therapies available, including the use of hydrogen peroxide compounds (H2O2), ozone therapy and even hyperbaric chambers (as used in decompression chambers for deep see divers).

In order to understand how human tissue absorbs and uses oxygen, we need first to understand the concept of pH. The term pH refers to concentration of the hydrogen proten, which in turn indicates the degree to which body tissue and fluids is either acidic or alkaline.

As a general rule in organic chemistry, acidic compounds tend to expel oxygen, while alkaline compounds absorb it. The contemporary western diet is, to say the least, rich in acid-producing foods, in particular refined sugar, and this is considered to be one of the main reasons that cancer rates have multiplied significantly during the last century.

For this reason, many therapeutic diets are specifically designed to eliminate too much acidity. Indeed most avoid over-consumption of sugars, which can be regarded as a major contributor to the onset and progression of cancer. In general, the majority of today’s conventional foods in the West can be considered as acid-forming. This includes meats, bread, grains and cereals. The notable exceptions to this are most fruits and vegetables. It might also be noted that excessive stress and very negative emotions can also cause acidic conditions to arise.

Because it takes about 20 parts of alkaline substance to neutralize one part acid, our bodies are constantly struggling to maintain a balance. In the early stages of imbalance, symptoms may be relatively mild, including things like colds and flu. The body then begins to use up alkalising minerals such as calcium to neutralize the excess acid, which in turn can lead to deficiencies. As acid wastes build up, fat is then deposited to protect vital organs (there is a link between excess acidity and obesity). As the acidity increases, microforms such as yeasts multiply in the body, producing more toxins and yet greater acidity, in a vicious circle. Ultimately, it is believed that this can lead to degenerative diseases such as cancer.

Alternative health clinics will regularly employ acid-neutralizing minerals, such as calcium, magnesium and potassium, in their treatment programs to assist with correcting acid/alkaline imbalances. Vitamin D is another key component, being essential to calcium obsorption by the organism.

Guidelines for testing saliva pH, which is considered to be the most reliable signal of ionic calcium deficiency, are given in the book “The Calcium Factor: The Scientific Secret of Health and Youth” by Carl J Reich, MD and Bob Barefoot. These are:

- For the non-deficient and healthy person, pH 7.5 (dark blue) to pH7.1 (blue) i.e. moderately alkaline.
- For the moderately-deficient to highly-deficient, pH 6.5 (blue-green) to pH 4.5 (light yellow).
- Over half of adults tested have a pH 6.5 or lower, indicating aging and lifestyle defects.
- Cancer patients frequently have a pH 4.5, particularly when terminal.
- As a point of reference, most children have a pH 7.5.

Other acid-neutralizing minerals are Rubidium, Cesium and Vanadium. There are also several proprietary products available commercially, including oxygen-based products that are aimed at maintaining the correct pH balance in the body.

I hope that this brief insight into the importance of oxygen in the correct functioning of the body, plus its role in the prevention and treatment of cancer, will encourage you to further investigate this fascinating subject, crucial to your health. As always, you should seek the guidance of a professional medical practioner before taking any medications or undergoing any form of therapy.
